Rules & Regulations

Mandate

The mandate of the OnStage Dance Festival is to provide an opportunity for recreational and competitive dance schools to attend a competition that provides a cultural and educational performance showcase that will enhance the participant’s self-confidence and further develop their dance skills.


We strive to provide a festival that is based around positivity and good sportsmanship.

Mission

The OnStage Dance Festival is a not-for-profit organization that is seeking to further the Arts in the Humboldt area and ensure the continuation of the art of dance in the community. Projects include working towards the building of an Arts Theater.

Terms of Participation

1. We are all volunteers. Undesirable conduct demonstrated by dance participants, Artistic Directors (instructors), parents, viewers or volunteers would mean expulsion for the duration of the festival regardless of status. “Expulsion” will be revisited by the board after the festival.
2. Registration adhering to time frames, submission of The Star Dévoiler Entry and reviewing this technical package.
3. Definition of Recreational Dance: A group average who spends less than 4 hours a week dancing all genres.
4. Definition of Competitive Dancer: A group average who spends more than 4 hours per week dancing all genres.
5. Definition of Novice Dance: An entire group of dancers who (as of December 31, 2023) have never competed at a dance competition or festival before.
6. Soloist - Maximum of 6 entries per individual.
7. All music must not contain inappropriate lyrics, dancing should be in good taste and not overtly provocative, costuming must be age-appropriate and tights must be worn in all performances. This is an all ages event.

To be completed online using Dance Genie. Ensure ages are accurate and routines are selected based on recreational, competitive and novice definitions above. Register early as there are there are limited spaces and it is first come first served. Each dancer may only be registered through one studio, no independent entries allowed. https://studio.dancecompgenie.com/Dance-Studio/studio-login.aspx


Payment may be made via e-transfer or cheque payable to ONSTAGE DANCE FESTIVAL INC. mailed to OnStage Dance Festival Inc. Box 3011 Humboldt, Saskatchewan S0K 2A0. Registration is not complete until payment has been received. The festival reserves the right to refuse entries. Once the schedule has been released there will be a $10 fee per change request.


Registration deadline is December 31, 2023. No refunds will be issued after this date.

Solo | One Dancer | 3 minutes
Duets | Two Dancers | 3 minutes
Trio | Three Dancers | 3 minutes
Small Group | Four-Eight Dancers | 4 minutes
Large Group | Nine or more Dancers | 5 minutes
Production | 15 minutes

Age Categories

  • The dancer’s age will be determined by the age of the competitor as of December 31, 2023.

  • The age category for duets and trios will be based on the oldest dancer.

  • The age category for a group is based on the average ages of the competitors rounded up or down to the closest whole number. (eg. 6.4 average age is 5-6 category whereas 6.5 average age is 7-8 age category).

  • Duets and Trios will compete together in the same categories.

  • Each category will be split after 8 entries, unless there are special circumstances.

  • Competitor that is an artistic director or instructor will be placed in the teacher category.

  • Groups with any individual 19+ (as of December 31, 2023) will automatically be placed in 19-21 Advanced or 22+ & Teacher categories based on their age regardless of group average.

  • Flights will be created by Dance Genie

Categories

Acro

Style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements.

Classical Ballet

A dance using classical technique to classical music. Done in either soft slipper or point shoes. No props.

Demi
Character

A dance using classical technique to semi-classical Character music

Lyrical

A dance portraying an idea or theme

Production

A dance with 20 or more dancers using any combination of dance techniques. Production is not considered for the Golden Ticket.

Other

A routine that may incorporate any one of or combination of styles already outlined or one that does not fit any of the categories already listed. All styles will be judged against each other in this category.

Breakin'

Breakin’ also known B-boying/b-girling, evolving from hip hop and one of the five tenets (graffiti, mc, DJing, knowledge and breakin’.) Breakin’ incorporating old style and newstyle includes toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes.

Classical Pointe

Incorporating classical ballet technique using Pointe shoes

Hip Hop

Style of dance that could include: - Street Style - Stepping - Old School Hip Hop - Video Style - Stomp - Dance Hall - Street Jazz/Pop - Clown - Reggaeton - Breakdancing - Hip Hop Fusions - Popping/Locking/Gliding - Krumping

Modern

Dance resembles modern art and music in being experimental and iconoclastic. Inspires audiences to a new awareness of inner and outer realities.

Song & Dance

Any dance suitable for stage, using live voice.

Character Ballet

A dance portraying a character, utilizing classical technique. Soft slippers or Pointe shoes may be used. Props may be used. Ethnic dances can be entered in this category.

Contemporary

A dance that is the exploration of the total movement potential of the body. It differs from commercial or competitive dance in that it is not bound by set standards, as well as defined styles such as ballet or jazz dance. Instead, it seeks to express a personalized vision, individualized approaches to the moving body and choreographic possibilities.

Jazz

Dance using jazz technique

Musical  Theatre

Any dance suitable for stage using lip sync

Tap

Dance using various rhythmic patterns. Pre-recorded tap sounds may not be used. No Jingle taps are allowed.

Awards & Scholarships
  • Dancers will be recognized for placement in their flight with a medal (gold, silver, bronze) decided by the adjudicators only based on all-around performance.

  • Monetary awards are given out for all dance genres.

  • Most Improved Studio award is calculated by the average of all dances during the current festival (minus the lowest scoring routine) and the change -/+ to the previous years’ festival average.

  • All around dancer and most promising dancer awards are based on the average of all solo dances completed by the individual.

  • Sparkle Awards are given to any entry regardless of mark based on adjudicators choice.

  • Twinkle Toes Award is given to adjudicators choice of dancer under 6.

  • Star Dévoiler Awards are monetary based and up to the sole discretion of the adjudicators.

Staging Canadell Stage Information
  • The overall stage dimensions are 52’ x 28’

  • Tap shoes may be worn on the backstage carpet and on the stage only, not in the hallways or practice areas

  • Music is to be uploaded into Dance Genie by January 31, 2024. Bring backup music.

  • During session breaks props from previous sessions must be removed and new props may be brought in.

  • No glass or liquid props allowed.

  • The dance floor will be marked center, center front & back, front left & right, back left & right.

  • No Loitering Backstage, one performer on stage and two in the wings. THERE WILL BE NO RUNNERS

General
  • Upon arrival to the Festival please check in at registration – Dancers will receive their gift and Instructors will receive their copy of the program, gift and VIP access lanyard.

  • Dancers can watch in the theater until there are no seats for the paid spectators. There are TVs and a projector screen for them when the theater is full.

  • There is one General admission doorway into the OnStage Theater. Tickets are to be purchased through Dance Genie.

  • NO photography or videography allowed in the theater. Please use our photo booth in the main lobby.

  • There will be no security on hand so please do not leave valuables unattended. OnStage Dance Festival is not responsible for any items lost or stolen.

  • The family (gender neutral) and male dressing rooms can be accessed by the labeled door and are on the lower level.

  • Female dancers (except those requiring wheelchair access) are to at all times use the labeled doors to access the dressing rooms and practice area.

  • Competitors should warm up in advance and be ready backstage 15 minutes prior to their stage time. NO RUNNERS will be on site calling teams.

  • Respect each other’s music in the practice area take turns and use good sportsmanship to ensure everyone has the best experience.

  • A routine with a dancer(s) missing must report this information to backstage before the performance and it will be announced to the adjudicators

  • A complete fire-escape plan is established and ready to be executed if required.

  • Adjudication will be filmed by Aspen Films and videos will be retrieved through Dance Genie once uploaded.

  • The City of Humboldt will provide a canteen throughout the festival. We ask that only water is brought into the dressing rooms and into the OnStage Dance Theater.

  • OnStage Dance Festival Inc. Board members reserves the right to add/subtract days based on entry numbers
